Woohoo, we’re celebrating a silver award for inclusion!

We’re delighted to share that St Oswald’s Hospice has been awarded Silver in the Neurodiversity Employers Index, a national scheme run by the charity Autistica.

The award recognises organisations who are taking real steps to support neurodivergent people at work.

It shows we’re making progress in creating a workplace where everyone feels understood, supported and valued – no matter their background.

Listening, learning, and making changes that matter

Over the past few years, we’ve been working across the Hospice to make things more inclusive for all our staff and volunteers.

That work was reflected in our 77% score for Neurodiversity Management – a key part of the Index. It highlights some of the areas where we’re already doing well, including:

Recent feedback from colleagues shows these changes are already making a difference – with more people saying they feel supported and confident being themselves at work.

Leigh Marrs, Chair of our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Group, said:

“We’re working hard to make sure everyone feels safe, valued and able to thrive at work – whatever their background or neurotype. Inclusion isn’t just about policies. It’s about people, and this award shows we’re moving in the right direction.”

That inclusive approach is already making a difference to people across the organisation – including Vickie Howd, a housekeeper here at the Hospice.

Vickie, who is autistic, explained how practical adjustments have transformed her experience at work. She said:

“I’ve had panic attacks in the past because of sensory overload, but the Hospice listened to what I needed."

“I was allowed to work in quieter areas, take sensory breaks, and even leave meetings early if they became overwhelming.

“They also helped me get precision-tinted glasses, which made a huge difference. I can do my job with far less stress and discomfort now.”

Leigh commented:

“Hearing from people like Vickie helps us understand what inclusion really looks like – and how we can keep getting better.”

Still learning, always growing

Our EDI Group was set up in 2019 to lead on building a culture of inclusion across the organisation. From recruitment and training to patient care and volunteering, the group works alongside teams throughout the Hospice to embed equity, diversity and inclusion at every level.

Leigh concluded:

“Receiving the Silver Award is something we’re really proud of – but it’s just the beginning. We’ll continue listening, learning and taking meaningful steps to create a workplace that truly works for everyone.”
