The Brady family chose to honour his memory in a way that reflected the compassion and care they experienced during his final days. In lieu of flowers, they donated £2,000 to St Oswald’s Hospice.
Six months later, on 14th March 2025, the family organised a tribute event at Revolución de Cuba in Newcastle. With tickets priced at £10, the evening featured a tribute act, live band, auction and raffle. Local businesses and hotels generously contributed prizes, and the response was overwhelming – 240 tickets sold out immediately, raising an incredible £5,110 for the hospice.
The event was more than just a fundraiser, it was a celebration of Michael’s life and a testament to the impact St Oswald’s had on the Brady family.
Paul, Michael’s son, said, “When my dad was in need of care, they were there for him – with compassion, dignity, and so much love.
“They didn’t just care for him physically, but emotionally too. The way they made him feel, the way they made us feel – like we weren’t alone in one of the most difficult times of our lives – is something I’ll never forget.”
St Oswald’s Hospice became a sanctuary of comfort and joy for the Brady family. From the on-site bar where Michael enjoyed the occasional gin and tonic, to the family cinema room, the chef and kitchen team who catered to every resident’s wish, and the peaceful garden complete with a koi pond and a “frog house” lovingly noted by granddaughter Alice – every detail spoke of care that went far beyond the clinical.
“They created an environment that was warm, welcoming, and full of life,” Paul added. “It wasn’t just about end-of-life care – it was about living well, right to the very end.”
The Brady family’s tribute event was not only a beautiful way to remember Michael but also a powerful reminder of the vital role hospices like St Oswald’s play in the community. Their generosity and dedication have helped ensure that others can receive the same compassionate care when they need it most.
