Let’s hear it for the 80s and 90s: Reunion event raises £10,000 for St Oswald’s Hospice

On a sunny Sunday afternoon in May, the Bigg Market in Newcastle City Centre turned back time to the 80s and 90s, where fun was had and money was raised.

The Bigg Market Reunion, now in its third year, started out as a Facebook group and has become a firm fixture on the calendar. Event organisers, Andy and former DJ Chris ‘The Disc’ Langshaw, initially set out to create a space where people could reminisce about their ‘nights out on the town’, sharing photos and the classic hits guaranteed to fill the dancefloor.

Talking about the occasion, Andy said, “We can’t believe something that started out as a ‘little meet up’ has grown into such a great event. It takes a lot of organizing but Chris and I love it.”

A pub crawl like no other, there was only one rule: ticket holders had to be over 40. With almost 3,000 tickets sold, it was a firm return for the perm, leg warmers and double denim, as attendees reunited with friends and fellow party goers to relive their youth.

A total of nine venues opened their doors to ticket holders with a roster of old school DJs getting back on the decks and spinning the hits of yesteryear.

Sophie Hindhaugh, Senior Fundraiser Business Partnerships at St Oswald’s Hospice, said, “It was a brilliant day, which we’re so thankful to be part of. The atmosphere was electric from start to finish and I’ve never experienced anything quite like it – the Bigg Market was bouncing all day!”

Two local charities were nominated as beneficiaries for this year’s event, St Oswald’s Hospice and Tiny Lives Trust, each receiving £10,000 raised from ticket sales, donations and raffle tickets sold on the day.

Sophie added, “We’re grateful to Steve Imray, member of our Better Together Business Club, for nominating us as one of the chosen charities and to the event organisers for such a fabulous time. Thank you to every who bought tickets and made a donation, your collective generosity will help to support those we care for and their families.”
