Goodbye James... and welcome Steph!

Steph Edusei and James Ellam at the St Oswald's Hospice Leap Year Ball in February 2020

James Ellam, our Chief Executive of 13 years will be taking early retirement next month. James’ initial plan of travelling with his wife is obviously on hold for now but are still eagerly anticipated.

“After over 13 years of being at St Oswald’s I’m feeling huge sadness at leaving this amazing place, especially in the current climate. How our staff and volunteers have rallied round in this crisis, and put our patients and the Hospice first has been amazing to see and I couldn’t be prouder. It’s going to be sad to not be able to say a proper goodbye to my ‘St Oswald’s family’ when I leave in June but I’m also looking forward to spending more time with my lovely family, and deciding ‘what next?’" - James Ellam, outgoing Chief Executive of St Oswald’s Hospice

St Oswald’s new Chief Executive is Steph Edusei, who started her role at the beginning of May. Steph Edusei was Chief Executive of Tell Us North, the organisation that runs Healthwatch Newcastle and Healthwatch Gateshead, a role held since 2014. This not only brings leadership experience within the local care sector, but also exposure to the wider system of the NHS in the North East.

She sat on the Newcastle and the Gateshead health and wellbeing boards, and contributed to system-wide development in the region. She was Interim Deputy Chief Executive of the Newcastle Council for Voluntary Service (2016-2017) where she shaped the organisation's strategic direction, and before that, spent time in Northumberland Clinical Commissioning Group (2011-2014) and NHS North of Tyne as Assistant Director of Commissioning (2010-2011), building on a range of operational and management posts within the NHS across the region – including as Assistant Director of Operations for North East Ambulance Service Trust between 2007 and 2011. We are sad to say goodbye to James and wish him the very best for his future adventure, but delighted to welcome Steph to the St Oswald’s family.
