Elmer’s Great North Parade is organised by St Oswald's Hospice and aims at bringing together businesses, schools and youth groups and the North East’s creative community. Together we will present a trail of over 50 large and 114 small individually designed Elmer the Patchwork Elephant sculptures. It is our second art trail, following Great North Snowdogs in 2016. All proceeds from Elmer’s Great North Parade will go to St Oswald’s Children’s Hospice and help local young people, children and babies living with incurable conditions.
Elmer’s Great North Parade is on from the 21st of August to 1st of November 2019. Keep up to date with all of our Elmer related events on the What’s On section of our website.
Elmer’s Great North Parade will be located in Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Sunderland. Our Elmer sculptures will take to the streets, parks and public spaces throughout Tyne and Wear. A herd of little Elmers created by young people from schools, youth groups, nurseries and clubs will also take over public buildings and visitor centres. Please use a trail map or download our Elmer’s specially created App!
The trail is based on the classic children’s book series by David McKee that celebrates its 30th Birthday in 2019. Elmer is loved by children of all ages and is a symbol of individuality and laughter!
You can get involved in tons of fun ways: from ticking off your list all of Elmer’s colourful sculptures in your area to discovering new parts of the North East with your friends and family and raising funds for St Oswald’s Children’s Hospice! Schools and not-for-profit youth groups have also been invited to get creative and decorate their own Elmer sculpture which will join the parade and be displayed across the North East.

No, this was a mistake on our behalf and we apologise for the confusion. If you donate to the ELMER text to donate code, we won’t assume consent. The ELMER text to donate reply message will ask if you would like to consent to marketing and if you do, you need to click through further to consent. If you do not click through to consent, we will not assume consent and not contact you because of this donation.

Yes – the trail is designed to be accessible by public transport. All of the sculptures will be located within walking distance of a Metro station. If you intend to walk, please remember to wear comfortable shoes, as you’ll be walking a long way if you want to complete the full trail. Information about the Tyne & Wear Metro can be found via: https://www.nexus.org.uk/metro
You don’t need to start in a particular place or complete the trail in a certain order. The trail is designed so you can see any of the Elmer’s whenever you like, however please check the opening times of any venue you wish to visit if the Elmer is located inside.
There are lots of excellent accommodation options in the area. If you are planning on using public transport to visit the trail, we’d recommended staying within walking distance of a Metro station. Information about the Tyne & Wear Metro can be found via: https://www.nexus.org.uk/metro Head to https://www.newcastlegateshead.com to explore local hotels, B&Bs, restaurants, cafes and to check out other events happening in the city during your stay. Alternatively take a look at https://www.airbnb.co.uk or https://www.trivago.co.uk
We would recommend allowing at least 2 days to complete Elmer’s Great North Parade. If you’re local to the area, you might want to break it down even more and stretch it over several days. There are plenty of cafes, restaurants and picnic spots along the way so you can take breaks and rest your feet.
Yes, all of the outside locations are wheelchair accessible. If you’re visiting an Elmer inside a venue it is best to contact that venue directly for more information.
