Meet Jules, who recently celebrated her 10-year anniversary in our Blaydon Charity Shop. She says it’s the community, the cause, and – of course – the cake that have kept her coming back week after week.
Why did you decide to start volunteering?
I started volunteering after I came in with some donations. I was chatting away to the Shop Manager who asked if I’d consider it. I went home and talked to my husband, and he said it could be great, so why not give it a try. I did and I loved it!
What does a typical day volunteering look like for you?
I walk in and am greeted by our Shop Manager, Sally. I go upstairs. Sign in. Put the kettle on and get anybody a drink who needs one.
Normally I’ll start sorting through the Gift Aid donations, looking out for things that may be required for the shop floor to sell.
Sally, our Manager at Blaydon is lovely. She provides lots of drinks, biscuits, goodies etc. this helps when we are a bit peckish! She is very appreciative of you giving your time and that goes along way. She always thanks you which is so important!
What’s kept you volunteering for 10 years?
Knowing I’m making a massive difference by donating my time to such a worthy cause. Volunteering helps to provide special care to many loved ones, making their journeys – and their families journeys – slightly easier.
I wouldn’t continue to volunteer unless I was happy – and I am, always.
What’s the most memorable item that’s been donated over the years?
Once, we had some wigs donated and a lovely lady who had cancer made very good use of them whilst she was getting better. That was just super, seeing her smile.
Have you got a favourite moment from your time volunteering?
Every time I go in I have very cherished moments. It’s the people that volunteer in the shop that make the shop work. It’s a real hub for people to meet, but also to do some good work too.
You feel good when you come in and leave feeling very pleased that you’ve helped.
If you, or someone you know can spare a few hours to volunteer in one of our charity shops please call your local store or email volunteer@stoswaldsuk.org
