Today, she helps other families receive that same support through her role as a Trustee.
Laura remembers the little things that made a difference to her dad:
“Dad had been in and out of hospital for most of the preceding year, and one thing that has always stayed with me was how excited he was that someone had asked what he wanted for breakfast and then got him some Rice Krispies.”
“The little things can feel really big at vulnerable times and the Hospice takes everyone into their bubble and makes them part of the St Oswald’s Hospice family.
That support continued after her dad died, when the Hospice was there for Laura and her family.
“I really wanted to give something back that would make a meaningful impact to their continued success. Becoming a Trustee has enabled me to provide support and guidance to ensure that St Oswald’s Hospice will be there for families that need it in the future.”
Bringing different skills to the Board
Alongside her personal connection to the Hospice, Laura brings valuable professional experience to the Board, showing how people from different backgrounds can make a real contribution.
Laura said: “My background is in property and, although not the obvious experience to bring to a Hospice, it has proved to be valuable for many aspects of Hospice business.”
For Laura, being a Trustee has also meant getting to know the Hospice from a different perspective and learning from the people around her.
She explained: “The mix of people that make up the Board of Trustees is varied and we all get to learn from each other and form lasting relationships.
“I had experience of St Oswald’s Hospice from the patient and family perspective, but it has been very rewarding to be on the other side of the table and understand everything that makes the Hospice so special.”
Could you help shape the future of St Oswald’s Hospice?
As we mark Trustees’ Week, we’re saying a big thank you to Laura and all our Trustees, who generously volunteer their time, skills and experience to help guide the Hospice.
We’re also looking for new people to join our Board, bringing different professional backgrounds, knowledge and perspectives.
She ended: “If you want to help an outstanding charity thrive for many years to come then becoming a trustee is an excellent way of using your skills and knowledge to help guide the ship.”
Whether your experience is in healthcare, property, business or another field, your knowledge could help us continue to support patients and families for years to come.
