Peter’s story – A familiar face on the Adult Inpatient Unit for over 30 years

As part of Volunteers’ Week, we’re celebrating the incredible volunteers whose time, kindness and compassion have helped shape St Oswald’s Hospice into the special place it is today.

One of those volunteers is Peter Wood, who has been volunteering as a Ward Helper for over 30 years. Whether he is serving meals, making a cup of tea, showing someone where to go, or simply taking the time to talk, Peter helps people feel welcomed and supported.

For families arriving on the ward at an emotional or uncertain time, that kindness and reassurance can mean everything.

Peter told us more about what volunteering at St Oswald’s Hospice has meant to him:

“When I first started volunteering in 1995, I don’t think I ever imagined I’d still be here almost 30 years later. But it’s the people who keep you coming back. Over the years, I’ve met so many patients, their families, staff and volunteers, and it has meant a great deal to be part of the hospice in this way.

“My belief in hospice care was strengthened even more when my sister died in a hospice in Wales. Seeing first-hand the difference that care, compassion and support can make at such an important time stayed with me and made me even more committed to being part of St Oswald’s Hospice.

“There’s something very special about being able to offer comfort or reassurance when someone needs it, whether that’s through a conversation, a friendly face, or simply being there.”

Peter Wood - Lord of Mercy Award 1

Peter’s dedication to volunteering was recognised nationally

In 2024, he received The Order of Mercy Volunteering Award from The League of Mercy Foundation, celebrating his outstanding voluntary service.

Susan Freeman, Head of Volunteering at St Oswald’s Hospice, said:

“Peter is a wonderful example of the difference volunteers make at St Oswald’s Hospice. He brings warmth, kindness and reassurance to the ward, and his support means so much to patients, families and staff.

“Volunteers’ Week gives us the chance to celebrate people like Peter, who give their time so generously and help make the Hospice feel like the special place it is. We’re so grateful to Peter, and to all our volunteers, for the kindness, care and commitment they bring to St Oswald’s Hospice every day.”

Thank you, Peter, for over three decades of kindness, commitment and care. And thank you to all our volunteers, past and present, who help make St Oswald’s Hospice such a special place.
