After retiring from her role at the Health Authority at 60, Helen wanted to stay active and find a way to give back to her community – and volunteering at the Hospice was the perfect fit.
Over the years, Helen has supported many areas of the organisation. Today, she plays a vital role in the Fundraising Team, where her tasks range from counting donations and writing thank-you letters to preparing event packs and keeping supporter records up to date. Her long-standing commitment and can-do attitude mean no task is ever too much trouble.
She said: “It’s wonderful to have something to do that keeps me busy and gives me a reason to get out of the house.”
“The best part is being with the team, having a laugh, and feeling like I’m contributing. I’ve made so many good friends here over the years. I also enjoy knitting little gifts and writing handmade thank-you notes in cards for our supporters.
“It’s my way of giving back to the community – it makes me happy to know I’m spreading a little joy in my own way.”
Susan Freeman, Head of Volunteering, has worked alongside Helen for many years and has seen first-hand just how much she brings to the Hospice.
She said: “Helen really is one of a kind. She’s been with the Hospice since the early days, not long after we opened our doors in 1985.”
“Even at 90, she still brings so much positivity to the team – it’s inspiring to see how involved and enthusiastic she is.”
Helen’s positive attitude and dedication continues to make a lasting impact on everyone she works with.
Susan Mackellar, who works alongside Helen in the Fundraising Team, describes her as a true “ray of sunshine.” She said:
“Helen doesn’t have to do anything extra to make a difference – just her presence in the office lifts everyone’s spirits and creates such a positive atmosphere.”
“She’s positive, kind, and passionate about making a difference.”
Susan Freeman, Head of Volunteering, added:
“This Volunteers’ Week, we want to say a heartfelt thank you to every one of our volunteers – from those just getting started to those who’ve been with us for decades. Your time, care and commitment make an incredible difference, and we’re so grateful to have you as part of the St Oswald’s Hospice family.”
Thank you, Helen, for everything you do. Your kindness, dedication, and energy make our Hospice a better place for all.
