The journey began with a traditional dip of their back wheels in the Irish Sea at Whitehaven, marking the start of their 138-mile adventure across the country to Tynemouth. Spirits were high, despite a slightly shaky start—Suzanne nearly took a tumble around the very first corner! But the team pressed on through the drizzle to reach Penrith by the end of day one.
Day two brought the toughest test: a gruelling climb up to Hartside Pass, Alston, with a total elevation gain of 1,500 metres. It was a chaotic day filled with wrong turns, frayed tempers, and a six-mile detour that ended in a rescue mission by their support crew, Kieran and Rhys. Thankfully, cheerleaders Tegan and Becca were on hand to lift spirits – especially after Jason jokingly threatened to toss Suzanne and her bike into a ditch!
The final leg to Tynemouth was filled with sunshine and smoother roads. With fewer hills and renewed energy, the team powered through to the finish line.
Tynemouth holds a special place in Jason’s heart – it’s where his parents took him as a child, and where he later brought his own children. Surrounded by friends and family, the group dipped their front wheels in the North Sea, completing the Coast to Coast tradition in style.
Thanks to the unwavering support of Kieran, Donna, and Rhys who followed the team every step of the way. The journey was filled with laughter, snacks, new friendships, and unforgettable memories. Most importantly, the team raised over £1,400 for St Oswald’s Hospice.
“We’ll always be grateful for everything St Oswald’s has done for our family,” Jason shared. “This ride was for Mam, and I know she was looking down on us, proud of every mile.”
Later this year, Jennifer’s grandchildren – Kieran and Rebecca – are taking on the Great North Run as part of Team St Oswald’s Hospice.
Karen Maclennan, Senior Fundraiser at St Oswald’s Hospice added, “We are so proud of Jason, Dallene and everyone for their fantastic achievement in memory of Jennifer. Thank you from all of us at St Oswald’s Hospice and we’ll look forward to cheering on Kieran and Rebecca in September.”
