‘A Century of Wedding Gowns’ highlights the best of pre-loved bridal

On Saturday 24th May, wedding dress fever hit Newbiggin-by-the-sea at a fundraising event at St Bartholomew’s Church that showcased ‘A Century of Wedding Gowns’.

Presented by Kevin Thornhill who was part of the team who made Princess Diana’s wedding dress, the show included replicas of royal wedding dresses and a dress from our very own Posh Frocks shop.

The event was organised by Christine Rogers, mum to 46 year old Helen, who is living with a life limiting illness and comes to our Focus on Living Centre, which offers holistic care for palliative patients.

Helen opened the event with an emotional speech about her journey so far.

Helen said, “Although many people think the hospice is a place for dying, we have realised that it is a place for living”.

She went on to describe how she’s had help from our social worker to complete Lasting Power of Attorneys, been signposted to a Will writing service and had support to “sort out what’s going around in her head” with the hospice chaplain.

Helen’s face lit up when she talked about coming for music therapy sessions which have brought the “joy” back to her life following “gruelling rounds of chemotherapy”. She told a funny story about her and music therapist, Tom , getting carried away while jamming together and added, “I look forward to every Thursday to come to the hospice and get my “joy” topped back up for the week!”

In preparation for the event, Helen and her sister, Caroline had a trip to Posh Frocks by St Oswald’s Hospice in Whitley Bay.

Helen bought her dress because she loved it - and although to many people it would be a “posh frock”, for her it was an “everyday Helen dress".

She’s a lady who loves colour, as you can see!

Whilst in the shop, she also spotted on the rails an outfit she had recently donated at our Ouseburn donation point – she did a “happy dance” when she realised her dress had made it to “Posh Frocks” and it would be raising funds for the hospice!

They were loaned a stunning wedding dress that featured in the ‘A Century of Wedding Gowns Show’.

It was modelled by Caroline who looked simply stunning.

The dress will be returned to Posh Frocks and available for the bargain price of £150!

At the end of the show, Helen, came down the aisle in her own wedding dress – looking radiant – especially with her pink hair and lightening bolt earrings!

“Not quite the look she had on her wedding day,” her mum exclaimed before going on to say:

“The support we’ve had today from our community is incredible - thank you!"

And thanks to Kevin for bringing the amazing dresses and of course, the models who are a delight!”

Guests were then served beautiful wedding cake and glasses of fizz – a perfect end to a special event raising much-needed funds for the hospice.
