Bringing his energy and sense of humour to the position, Richard talks about the transition into his new role at St Oswald’s Hospice.
How long have you been at St Oswald’s Hospice?
3 years. I started out as a bank retail driver which also led into being on the patient transport team within the Hospice.
How have you found the transition from Van Driver to House Clearance and Transport Team Leader so far?
I have found the transition okay actually which was helped as I worked in the team prior. It’s learning all the processes and procedures in this fast-paced environment of which I hold all the answers apparently! I’m learning how to problem solve and think on my feet very quickly.
What does your role involve?
I manage the House Clearance service from initial enquiries to completing the work whilst ensuring a compassionate and respectful service is delivered. Leading the team of staff which include full time drivers, bank drivers and volunteer crew. Looking after the fleet of vans within the retail department, as well as sweeping up and making the tea!
What does a typical day on the job look like?
I arrive at the office early to ensure we start the day off on the front foot. Assist the staff in conducting the House Clearance, take items to shops where they may sell better, book in property viewings, logistics and problem solving, rotas along with liaising with family members, solicitors and estate agents. No clock watching here…well there is to make sure you can fit everything in!
What’s the most unusual item you’ve found on a House Clearance?
We discover lots of interesting and meaningful items. I remember one recently where bedrooms where stacked full of toys that I also had and played with as a child which brought back many memories. These were sent to eBay as they were complete with original boxes which made a lovely profit for the hospice as well as making someone’s day.
Can you tell us a fun fact about yourself?
I love running and work on an ad hoc basis for my mates sporting events company called Wild Deer events. This is what happens when you’re single, you fill up all your spare time to keep occupied. Plus, with Wild Deer events it takes me to places I wouldn’t normally tend to go.
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
It’s a very rewarding role which helps towards the costs of keeping the care services we provide for patients and their families running in a sustainable manner.
