The David Goggins Challenge

If you have taken on the Great North Run before, you’ll know just how far 13.1 miles feels, despite the roars of support from the watching crowds. So spare a thought for St Oswald’s supporter, Lucas Wenn 32 from Cramlington, who recently ran 48 miles in 48 hours in support of his local hospice!

Lucas took inspiration from the famous ‘David Goggin Challenge’ which requires participants to run four miles every four hours, day and night, clocking up nearly two marathons worth of distance in two days. It takes its name from American fitness guru David Goggins, who is a former Navy Seal. As a serving member of the HM Armed Forces, Lucas wanted to take on his toughest running challenge to date and really test himself. He said:

As I am in the army, I am pretty active, but I am not the biggest fan of running. When my friend mentioned this challenge I knew I had to do it, it’s so extreme but right up my street. I only decided two weeks before that I was going to do, and as I was also fundraising for St Oswald’s and planned to run the Great North Run for them, I thought this would be a brilliant way to boost donations.

I stayed local and ran round the estate I live on and some local country parks. Having to run 4 miles every 4 hours, it needed to be somewhere quick and easy to get to so I wasn’t travelling in my crucial recovery time in between each run. I wore my St Oswald’s vest and people were coming up to me mid run  to wish me luck and give donations. The support was brilliant and helped push me through.

I’m over the moon with what I have achieved and how much I’ve raised. It’s been a challenge that has not only tested me physically, but mentally too. I’m a long way off Mo Farah’s pace and won’t be challenging him for the podium, but its great training for the Great North Run in September. I am delighted to have already £500 in donations from friends and family and hope to raise even more for this brilliant cause."
