St Oswald’s supporter Mark Taylor has teamed up with a local quizmaster to raise funds for the hospice. Mark, 36 from Monkseaton was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) in 2009 and has visited the hospice for Complementary Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and stayed on the inpatient unit.
Mark approached Harry Bell, who has ran the popular quiz at Whitley Bay Golf Course for over thirty years, with an idea to put on a virtual quiz to raise funds for the hospice.
Mark explains:
I know Harry from working together at Kenton School so approached him with the idea of running an online quiz with Zoom to his regular quiz goers. With some technical support from his son Michael, we have ran three quizzes so far with over sixty teams taking part from as far away as New Zealand and America.
Through our Just Giving page, we have raised over £800, including a large donation from the members of Whitley Bay Golf Club. We plan to continue the quiz every fortnight and are getting very close to our target of £1,000. Thank you to everyone who has got involved with the quiz so far, it really has been fantastic to be able to raise lots of money for a great cause, at a time when they really need the extra support.
Mark has experienced first-hand the care that St Oswald’s offers, and it was this that gave him the idea to organise a fundraiser in aid of the hospice.
Mark added:
I have visited St Oswald’s many times over the last ten years for both outpatient appointments and to stay on the Inpatient Ward. The CBT sessions help me cope with stress and anxiety and immediately made an impact, even more than medication By being able to raise money for St Oswald’s is my way of saying thank you.
