Meet Nathanial

Nathanial Ray joined the hospice in January as our new Head of Technology and Business Intelligence.

He’s in charge of using the latest data to optimise the way we deliver our services and brings a wealth of experience to the role. We had a chat with him about what attracted him to St Oswald’s Hospice and what his role involves…

Where did you join St Oswald’s Hospice from?

I joined after spending 7 months as a full-time caregiver for my now 20-month-old son who has a health condition. After seeing him improve and transition to nursery, I was ready to return to work. I previously spent over 3 years as the Assistant Director of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Digital Transformation at Karbon Homes, where I helped progress their digital transformation journey. Before this, I spent 18 years in IT and BI leadership roles at Procter & Gamble (P&G).

What attracted you to working at St Oswald’s Hospice?

After leaving P&G, one of the biggest global corporations, I wanted to use my experience and knowledge to make a difference locally. At Karbon Homes, I was able to make a difference to people in the North East through housing but I was keen to try a similar role in another sector. When I saw the job at St Oswald’s Hospice, it ticked all the boxes.

What does your role involve?

“I ensure that all St Oswald’s Hospice staff can focus on delivering our services the best way they can using tech and Business Intelligence (BI). This can mean helping them to perform their roles or establishing new ways to deliver services. To do this, I listen to and understand issues, and plan and support the implementation of changes.”

What do you mean by Business Intelligence?

It’s about helping everyone make the best decisions with the right information, at the right time. It’s an umbrella term that covers the methods of identifying decision-making processes and what information is needed. It’s also about collecting, storing, and analysing data from business operations and activities and presenting these findings in useful and impactful ways.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

“I play hockey on Saturday afternoons and afterwards, I enjoy a pint with my team. On weeknights, my partner and I will watch an episode or two of our latest favourite television drama before we get some sleep ready for the 5.30am wake up! Other than that, I enjoy spending time off with my 3 kids.”

Welcome to the team Nathanial!
