Many of John’s pieces of art are hung along the corridors of St Oswald’s and staff members still remember the impact he had on their lives. Eileen has given an incredible Christmas present to her family, as she has gifted the car to her son, Stephen who said:
Driving Home For Christmas
Christmas came early for the Grinsell Family this year.
After buying the lucky raffle ticket in the Big Car Raffle, Eileen Grinsell, 86 from Killingworth was delighted to receive the phone call informing her of the raffle draw.
I honestly can’t believe it. I’m delighted, it really is super! It’s so lovely that it’s come from St Oswald’s. My husband John would be laughing his head off if he was here. I think I need a sit down though and have a G&T to be honest.
My husband died at St Oswald’s in 2011 after attending the Day Services for 9 years. He loved it there. Once a week he’d go to the craft room and draw incredible pictures, he was a super artist. It was the highlight of his week and he loved being there and even helping other people with their crafts.
I’m thrilled to have won, I love St Oswald’s and they really means a lot to us. They did so much for us in John’s life and afterwards. My sister also died at the Hospice a few years ago and the chaplaincy team and all the staff have just been incredible.
It still doesn’t feel real. I’m stood looking at the car and it’s not mine, I don’t believe it. I just want to say a big thank you to St Oswald’s for continuing to work through this difficult year and managing to raise money to help families like ours. When my dad was here he loved it. You did so much for him, my mam and my family that I don’t think I can thank you enough, and then you giving us a car from a raffle ticket doesn’t seem real. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
Danielle Harvey, Events & Community Fundraising Manager added:
“It is really quite touching when the winners of our raffle have a personal connection to St Oswald’s and hearing their thoughts about how much the care they received meant to their families at such a difficult time.
“We couldn’t continue providing this level of care without the help and support of our local community, from the businesses who donate the prizes to the individuals who buy the tickets. We are truly grateful. We had three very deserving winners and we hope that they all enjoy their prizes.”
