When Dunston resident Margy Young sadly lost her daughter to cancer, she decided she wanted to do something special with her spare time and give something back to her local community.
Aged just 26 when she died, Margy’s daughter was cared for by a Carlisle hospice.
Seeing the benefit of hospice care first-hand, Margy was inspired to support the movement.
Already aware of St Oswald’s work in the North East, the 53-year-joined the team at the charity’s Gateshead shop, where she has now volunteered for five years.
The retired grandmother gives four days-a-week of her time to help out at the popular Jackson Street store; enjoying playing her part in the team by getting involved in a variety of tasks.
Margy, who lives with her partner, said:
I love the days when I’m at the shop and miss it when I’m not there. I would do more, but I also look after my seven-year-old grandson, Dylan. That’s what’s great about volunteering - you can fit it around your life.
For Margy, the social aspect of volunteering in the shop is her favourite thing about volunteering- meeting new people and chatting to customers, and she thrives on the busy atmosphere.
The team is so friendly and the shop’s in a great location in the town centre so there’s always something to do and someone to talk to. It’s just a nice place to be and much better than just sitting at home.
Ahead of a special in-store Retail Volunteer Recruitment event at St Oswald’s Gateshead shop next week (4th August 2017), Margy is urging others to try volunteering and give any time they can to help out at the new-look store, which is struggling to recruit new people to the team since it closed for a recent refurbishment.
Visitors to the event can find out more about the fun roles on offer, sign up for a taster day to meet the team and experience what it’s like to be a volunteer, and even bag a bargain with a sale on selected items.
The shop always has loads of great stock and since it’s makeover it looks great, but some volunteers moved on when we closed for a little while. I would encourage anyone thinking about giving even a few hours of their time to sign up for a trial and just see what it’s like – you’ve got nothing to lose by giving it a go. The team is very supportive and if you have any problems they’re happy to help. I love it!
