As well as providing services for adults, we provide a short break service for children and young adults from birth to 25 years old with life-shortening conditions from across the region.
Although care is at the heart of everything we do, we aim to create magical moments and special memories for all the families we support. When we found out that one of the parents of a child we care for were getting married we wanted to help to make their wedding day extra special.
Dominic, aged 16 from Durham, stayed with us the night before the wedding, and two staff members took him to the wedding and cared for him on the day.
Dominic’s dad and full time carer, Kevin, talks about how we support Dominic, and how we helped to look after him on the wedding day. He said:
“From the moment we arrive at St Oswald’s Dominic’s giggles fill the Family Lounge. Dominic is a very sociable child and loves interaction, which he gets plenty of when he’s on his stays.
“As Dominic’s full time carer I’d be the first to admit that I’m not perfect, I do my best but sometimes I might miss something. The staff at St Oswald’s never miss anything, they are very thorough and caring, which makes it very easy to leave Dominic as I know he will be safe and well looked after.
“Although Dominic benefits from his stays at the Hospice, so do the whole family. Having St Oswald’s support both on the morning of our wedding and at the wedding took a lot of pressure off Ruth and I, which enabled us to relax and enjoy our day. St Oswald’s staff changed Dominic, gave him his medication and ultimately helped the day run a lot smoother. If we hadn’t had the support of the Hospice the day would have been a lot tougher for us.”
“St Oswald’s has certainly changed our lives for the better. We really couldn’t do without the place now.”
