Hospice Care Week

Monday 7th Oct to Sunday 13th Oct

Sharing is caring and we encourage our staff, volunteers, patients and families to open up, talk and support one another. Hospice Care Week is our chance to bust myths and share stories.

Let’s talk about the elephant in the room - Join us for a series of events on Thursday 10th October.

We know it’s not easy to talk about death and dying, but don’t let it be the ‘elephant in the room’ and join us for a series of events in a safe and supportive environment. Book your place at any of these events by visiting: www.stoswaldsuk.org/hospice-care-week

10.30am - 11.30am:  Marketplace event, including information about Wills, funeral planning and advanced care planning

Our 'planning for the future' marketplace event will be an opportunity for you to find out more about FREE Wills for charity with McClure Solicitors, funeral planning with Mark Wait Funerals and advanced care planning with Dr Owen Lever, Associate Specialist in Palliative Medicine at St Oswald's.

4pm - 5.30pm:  In conversation with Dr Kathryn Mannix, best-selling author of "With the End in Mind"

This intimate event is an opportunity to hear from Dr Kathryn Mannix, author of the Sunday Times bestseller 'With the End in Mind'. The book was also shortlisted for the Wellcome Book Prize and is based on her over 30 years of experience as a doctor working in palliative care. Kathryn has recently toured the world with her book, and wants us all to know more, and be less afraid, about dying.

6pm - 8pm:  Death Café

Join us at our third Death Café to get involved in open conversations about death. At the Death Café, led by our Spiritual Care Lead, Davina, we will be encouraging attendees to engage in open conversations about death, eat cake and drink tea. We know it's not easy to talk about death, even at a Hospice, but we want to encourage others to talk in a safe and supportive environment.

What else is going on?

The launch of Hospices North East, a regionwide network of hospice, working together to improve care for patients and families with incurable conditions, will take place during Hospice Care Week.
