Big Elmer Raffle winner announced!

An ele-phantastic prize has been won!

A St Oswald’s supporter had an elephant-sized surprise recently, when she discovered she was the new owner of her very own Elmer! Mrs Douglas from South Northumberland had entered the Big Elmer Raffle, which was raising funds for St Oswald’s Hospice but not for a moment did she think that hers would be the lucky ticket! We invited Mrs Douglas into the hospice to find out more.

She told us: “It was back in February that I first heard about the raffle and decided to buy a ticket. I was telling my daughter Carol about it and as she had found £1 on the sofa, she asked me to buy an extra one too! In the end, I bought five tickets from the St Oswald’s shop in Shiremoor. Carol joked with me that If I won, it could come and live with her in her garden. It became a bit of a running joke whenever I spoke to my daughter!”

I thought it was a joke when Sarah from the Fundraising team called me, I just couldn’t believe it! Sarah had left a message saying she was from the hospice and I had won a prize, but I didn’t for a moment think it would be Elmer. I was very excited to tell my daughter, she was driving when I rang so she put me on speaker phone in the car and I just announced, ‘I’ve won Elmer!'

Mrs Douglas

Mrs Douglas’s ticket was picked out from thousands of entries, at the Big Elmer Charity Auction on Tuesday 12th December. Our fundraiser, Sarah Tait, had the lucky job of contacting the winner to deliver the good news.

Mrs Douglas added:

“While the Elmer move is being planned, Elmer will live with me at home in my dining room, but the longer term plan is for him to move to my daughters new garden near Carlisle, where he will be well loved and looked after."

A huge thank you to everyone who bought a Big Elmer Raffle ticket!

"We are delighted that Mrs Douglas has won our full-sized, patchwork Elmer sculpture. it sounds like he’s going to have a fabulous forever home, once her daughter’s garden is ready to move into, and we look forward to hearing how he is settling in.

“We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who bought a Big Elmer raffle ticket, helping us to raise vital funds for St Oswald’s Children’s Hospice.
