St Oswald's Strictly raises £60,000!
A host of North East celebrities took to the dance floor in St Oswald’s Celebrity Strictly Dine and Dance, which raised a fantastic £60,000 for the North East charity.
The event, which took place on 11th February 2012, featured local celebrity contestants including Viz co-creator Simon Donald, Tyne Tees weather presenter Alex Watson and BBC Radio Newcastle’s Sue Sweeney.
The celebrities battled it out on the dance floor in front of a panel of esteemed judges including This Morning Agony Aunt Denise Robertson, before Tyne Tees presenter Sarah Kelly and professional dance partner Stuart Hatton were crowned St Oswald’s Strictly Star 2012.
The celebrities had undergone three months of gruelling rehearsals to perfect their pasos and refine their rumbas for the event, which was hosted by North East entertainer, Steve Walls, and TV presenter, Kim Inglis.
Sarah, who was voted the winner by members of the audience, said:
“It was an amazing night. Stuart has been an absolutely brilliant teacher. I’ve really enjoyed dancing but the most important thing is that we raised such a fantastic amount of money for a great chairty.”
Denise Robertson said:
“I didn’t want to miss the glitz and glamour of tonight. The best thing is we had fun raising money for one of the best causes in the world. “
Amy Wilson, Community Fundraiser at St Oswald’s, said: “The atmosphere at our Celebrity Strictly Dine and Dance was fantastic. The evening was outrageously glamorous and packed full of fabulous entertainment from our celebrities.
“We’re thrilled to have raised such a fantastic amount and are extremely grateful for the generosity of our supporters who are helping to support families from across the region.”
Based on the hit TV Show, Strictly Come Dancing, celeb contestants including former England and Durham cricketer Steve Harmison, founder of Viz Simon Donald and ex NUFC player Steve Howey are partnered with professional dancers. They will show off their dancing skills twice - for a group dance and then a show dance. An esteemed panel of judges including This Morning's Denise Robertson, will then rate their efforts...but remember it's the audience who get the final say!
