Legends from North East football, including Paul Gascoigne and Peter Beardsley, reunited for a special charity match on Sunday 9th July to celebrate the lives of Pavel Srnicek and Chris Heron in aid of St Oswald’s.
The Pavel Cup, which was held at Dunston UTS, attracted audiences from across the region who cheered on two teams made up of former footballing stars: The Pavel Srnicek Squad and the Felling Old Boys team. Face painting, animal petting and refreshments were also on hand to entertain the audience.
After a dramatic and exciting game, the Pavel Srnicek Squad triumphed with an impressive 7-1 victory and lifted the 2017 Pavel Cup.
Steve Wraith, Managing Director at Newcastle Legends who organised the event, said:
We’ve had an absolutely great day and although this is only the second Pavel Cup, we’ve managed to take the game up a notch this year with some big name players and by attracting a great turnout. The day is always extremely special to us as we remember two local footballing legends – Pavel Srnicek and Chris Heron- and it’s great we can support St Oswald’s, one of Pav’s favourite charities, at the same time. Will there be a Pavel Cup 3? After today’s success, it’s a strong likelihood. We’re delighted at how well people have taken the Pavel Cup to their hearts.
Paul Gascogine, who made a surprise appearance to home turf, even scoring a goal during his appearance, said:
It’s brilliant to be back on the pitch for such an amazing cause, enjoying the game I love. Pav had such a special connection with his fans and the turnout today and the atmosphere is just epic. Siobhan from St Oswald's delivered a fantastic and inspiring speech to the players before the game kicked off which reminded us how important the work of the Hospice is. St Oswald’s is a fantastic charity and today was a great chance to celebrate Pav, football and St Oswald’s.
Peter Beardsley, former NUFC player, said:
Today has been such a fantastic day; it was such an honour to play in the cup and to be reunited with lots of familiar faces. As soon as we stepped back into the changing rooms, it was like the clock had been wound back years with the same banter, humour and pranks we enjoyed in years gone by. Having visited St Oswald’s before, I know first-hand how important their work is and was proud to be able to support the cup.
Siobhan Sargeant, Corporate Fundraiser at St Oswald’s, said:
The team at St Oswald’s were delighted to be involved with the 2017 Pavel Cup. It was a wonderful day and our staff and volunteers had a fabulous time meeting their local heroes. Seeing Gazza and Peter Beardsley back on the pitch together again was such a highlight. I was lucky enough to chat to Gazza who was extremely supportive and enthusiastic about the work of the Hospice, and thanked us for the work we do in the area he grew up in. Dunston is really close to our hearts as our furniture shop is just yards away from the stadium and we have cared for many patients from Dunston and the surrounding areas over the years. The Pavel Cup was a fitting tribute to both Pavel and Chris Herron and we were proud to have been a part of it once again. All funds raised from the event will go directly towards the care of local adults, young people and children with life-limiting illnesses in our community. Thank you so much to everyone who made it happen and supported the event on the day.
All proceeds from the Pavel Cup will support the work of St Oswald’s. The final totals raised are yet to be confirmed but with such a great turnout, we think we will have smashed last year’s total! Check out our news page in the coming weeks for further updates.
