Current volunteering opportunities

Thank you for your interest in volunteering for us! Please find below some of our current volunteer opportunities in the North East.

Over 1400 volunteers work alongside our paid staff and offer their skills, experience and expertise to every department within the Hospice. They are, quite simply, the lifeblood of St Oswald’s and we wouldn’t be able to operate without them.

We have over 120 different volunteering roles: working directly with patients; in a support role; in our charity shops or in our Fundraising team. Roles are based at the Hospice in Gosforth, or out in the local communities of Newcastle, Gateshead, Northumberland, Tyneside and Sunderland.

  • Day Hospice Admin Volunteer

    To provide reception and admin support in Day Hospice.

    Times needed:

    • Tuesday 10.00am-3.00pm
    • Thursday 10.00 am-3.00pm
    • And Bank to cover absence and holidays

     


     

     

  • St Oswald's Ambarssadors

    We are looking for confident presenters to work externally within their own community to promote the work of St Oswald’s and its Fundraising opportunities. You will have the chance to meet interesting people and visit interesting places as well as support our Fundraising efforts.

    Times needed:

    • Times and days negotiable.

    We are ideally looking for people from the North Tyneside and Gateshead areas but also welcome people from Newcastle, Northumberland, South Tyneside and North Durham


     

    St Oswald's Friends Groups

    St Oswald’s Friends are groups of like-minded people who raise awareness and funds for St Oswald’s in their local areas.

    Typically, this can be organising a coffee morning and raffle in the local church, a cheese and wine evening, or having a stall at a fair selling donated goods or retail stock.  Friends Groups arrange bag-packs in their local supermarkets and try to encourage their local community to become supporters too.

    Friends Groups sometimes help out at events organised by our in-house fundraisers such as our annual Christmas Market or Light up a Life remembrance services. They also help to man stands at local exhibitions and shopping centres, raising awareness of our work and fundraising.

     

  • Car Driver Assessor

    To assess new & existing volunteer car drivers to ensure that a good standard of comfortable and safe driving is delivered to patients and carers being transported by St Oswald’s.

    Times needed:

    • Bank, times and days negotiable.

     

  • Kitchen Assistants

    We are looking for help in our very busy professional kitchen, taking part in vegetable preparation, dishwashing, and general kitchen duties in a very sociable area.

    Times needed:

    • Wednesday   -10:00am - 2:00pm, 1 opps available  
    • Saturday - 10:00am - 2:00pm, 1 opps available  

     


     

  • Administration Volunteer

    Tasks range from printing and laminating materials to folding and stapling leaflets and more

    Times needed:

    Monday, Tuesday (Mornings) and Wednesday.

     


      

  • Day Hospice Musician

    A variety of performers wanted to provide various musical styles to our Day Hospice patients. Can be an individual artist or a group. Needs to have good interpersonal skills as there will also be interaction with the patients

    Times needed:

    • Tuesdays-Fridays are available, ideally a slot at about 11.00am however could be negotiable (weekly, fortnightly, monthly slot)

     

    Day Hospice Volunteer

    To help provide a friendly, relaxed atmosphere that enables the Day Hospice Team to meet the physical, emotional and social needs of the patients

    Times needed:

    • Tuesdays and Wednesdays 10.00-3.00pm available – this will be a regular weekly shift

    Lymphoedema Outreach Clinics; Main Hospice and Blaydon

    Would you be interested in assisting our Lymphoedema Nurses at the Main Hospice or at our outreach clinic in Blaydon?  This is a role with direct patient contact but some basic admin/IT duties may be required

    Times needed:

    Hospice

      • Tuesday afternoon: 1.00pm-4.30pm
    • Thu am 9.15am-12.30pm and 1.00pm-4.30pm

     

    Blaydon

    • Monday morning 8.45am – 12.00pm and 12.30pm - 4.30pm
    • Tuesday afternoon 12.30pm – 4.30pm

     

    Shiremoor

    • Monday morning  8.45am – 12.00pm and 12.30pm - 4.30pm
    • Tuesday afternoon 12.30pm – 4.30pm

     


     

    Ward Helpers

    We are looking for Bank Ward Helpers (covering for absences) who are available during the day for morning and afternoon shifts to serve tea, coffee and refreshments to our patients and their visitors on the Adult In-Patient Unit. Ideally we need volunteers who can make a long-term ongoing commitment to this role with the possibility of taking on a regular shift. This will enable us to compliment and support our volunteers from local schools who do this role but only commit to a fixed period.  Experience of working as part of a team would be advantageous.

    Shifts Available:

    Morning shifts - All days (10am-11.30am)

    We are particularly looking for cover on a Sunday Morning excluding the first 2 weeks. Afternoon shifts ( Mon-Fri 1.15-4pm) – (Sat and Sun 2-4pm)

     

    We are also looking for Ward Helpers to take on a regular weekly shift on a Monday afternoon, Friday afternoon, Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon, Saturday supper and Sunday morning (last 2 or 3 Sundays in the month only)

    Shifts Available:

    Monday afternoon, Friday afternoon (1.15-4pm), Saturday and Sunday morning (10am-11.30am), Saturday afternoon (2-4pm), Saturday supper (5.15-7pm)

     


     

  • Event volunteers

    We are looking for friendly, outgoing, confident supporters to join us in delivering our many and varied events. For instance we provide a tent for our Great North Runners, our Christmas Market needs extra pairs of  hands to make it happen, We promote our wedding favours and our new bridal shop at various wedding fairs. We are heavily involved in our new Snow Dogs campaign, please go to

  • Adult Minibus Drivers

    To transport patients and relatives as and when required, to and from Day Hospice, Outpatients clinics, Hospital appointments and home visits.

    Times needed:

    • Permanent duties available on Mondays Wednesdays Thursdays and Fridays.  Please contact us for further details.
    • Also bank volunteers required:
    • 8:30 – 5.00pm mornings or afternoons, or whole days.  Days and times negotiable.

      

    Patient Transport

    Car owner/drivers are needed to transport patients to and from appointments at our Day Hospice and Outpatient Suite, with other driving tasks in-between.

    Times needed:

    • Regular and Bank shifts with times and days negotiable.

    Van Driver's Assistant

    To work alongside our Retail Van Drivers picking up donated items across the area and moving stock between our retail units in the community.

    Times needed:

    • A variety of days are available and a lunch allowance is provided.

    Lunch allowance provided.

    Typical start times would be 8am at Kingston Park warehouse with a 3:30-4:00PM finish depending on route and traffic.

    Non Patient Car Driver

    To deliver Garments or Fundraising items – no patient transport involved.

    Preferred day – Wednesdays – other days by negotiation.  Full or half day

  • If you would like to help us raise the £6.5million we need each year to continue our services and volunteer at an event, we’d love to welcome you to our fundraising volunteer team.

    Volunteering with our fundraisers is a great way to boost your CV, get sales and customer service experience, make new friends and help a local charity.

    Collection Can Volunteers

    Collection can volunteers visit shops, organisations and other premises to pick up and exchange collection cans, in teams and individually, and return full cans to the Fundraising office at the Hospice. It’s vital that we maintain good relationships with premises that support St Oswald’s with a collection can and our volunteers are key to doing this.


     

    Collection Line Volunteers

    To help raise funds for St Oswald’s by joining a team of volunteers to assist with the administration of the collection of donated goods for resale in our local shops.  Good telephone skills essential for this role. Please note this is offsite role based in Kingston Park Warehouse.

    Times needed:

    • Tuesday mornings, afternoon, and all day
    • Friday mornings

    Corporate Volunteers

    We are able to offer teams of corporate volunteers a chance to ‘take over’ a St Oswald’s shop for a day.

    Teams collect as much stock as possible before the big day (via a Donation Station if suitable) and then sort, price, steam, display and sell as much as they can on the day to raise money for the Hospice.

    Promotional Volunteer in Face to Face (F2F) Fundraising Team 

    To assist the F2F team at promotional stands within the community. You will not be required to fundraise individually.

    Times needed:

    Ad hoc, as and when required. We hope to give at least 4 weeks notice of promotional events


    Fundraiser Volunteers

    Volunteers to assist our fundraising team. This is a new opportunity and we are seeking proactive, confident volunteers to research and source donated raffle prizes from local businesses, to co-ordinate requests to local supermarkets for bag packs and nominations to participate in charity token schemes, and to assist the fundraising team with community engagement.

    Times needed:

    We need volunteers for one day a week, times and days are negotiable.


     

    Fundraising Assistants

    Each year we have a number of supporters who organise events to raise much needed funds for St Oswald’s hospice.  To increase the revenue of these events many request us to help them find prizes to be able to hold raffles or tombola’s.

    We would like a volunteer to coordinate and approach organisations for raffle prizes.

    This role could also involve coordinating requests for bag packs in local supermarkets, and requests for volunteer ambassadors to attend local community groups to talk about the work of the hospice.  

    Times needed:

    This is a new role so hours are negotiable.

    We envisage this will take approx. 1 day every week, as this is an ongoing project. This could be split between 2 volunteers.


     

    Volunteer Ambassador

  • Gardeners

    To be a part of the gardening team, to maintain and develop the garden areas on the main Hospice site.

    Times needed:

    • Tuesdays or Friday if possible, otherwise negotiable.

     


     

  • Hairdressers

    Would you like to make someone feel good? Qualified hairdressers are required within our day hospice and in-patient unit. We have a great new hairdressing salon, and want to increase usage.

    Times needed:

    • Wednesday, Thursday, Friday am, pm or all day

      10am-12pm or 1pm-3pm or all day.

     

     

  • Hospice Gift Shop Volunteer

    We require extra help in our Gift Shop on site at the Hospice.  Tasks include stock management, display and customer service.

    Times needed:

    • Mondays - 10.00am-1.00pm and 1.00pm-4.00pm 
    • Tuesdays - 10.00am-1.00pm and 1.00pm-4.00pm 
    • Wednesdays -10.00am-1.00pm
    • Thursdays - 10.00am-1.00pm
    • Saturdays - 10.00am-1.00pm and 1.00pm-4.00pm

     

    Kingston Park Retail Hub Volunteer

    We are looking  for computer literate volunteers for our collection line. They must be comfortable on the telephone, to take calls from members of the public and arrange collection of donated items.


    Times needed:

    • Fri am.

     

    Shop Volunteers

    We’re looking for friendly people who enjoy working as part of a team and will be happy to help our customers and provide quality service.

    We ask that our volunteers show an interest in the shop and raising money for a great cause, as well as enthusiasm and commitment to St Oswald’s and what we stand for.

    A shop volunteer role can be very varied; from assisting customers, sorting and replenishing stock and working on the tills to creating visual displays on the shop floor, window dressing and helping to promote public understanding of the work St Oswald’s does.

    Stock Processors 

    Our charity shops in Ashington, Byker, Four Lane Ends, Forest Hall and Sunderland, and behind-the-scenes at our Central Sort facility on Clayton Street in Newcastle, currently need volunteer Stock Processors to join our teams. 

    Working right in the heart of the shop process, Stock Processors are responsible for preparing our donated goods for sale. Tasks include sorting and organising donated deliveries, then getting stock ready for sale by steaming, tagging and hanging goods to be sold in the shop.

    Whether you can offer an hour a week, a day a week or more as a volunteer, we would love to have you as part of our team and times are flexible so you can fit volunteering around your life.     Upcycler Volunteer

    Are you creative with a flair for design? We are looking for help in giving life to old furniture and donated items creating upcycling products ranging from shabby chic cabinets and tables to patterned glassware. Role based in Eldon Garden, Newcastle or Dunston Furniture Store


    Times needed:

    • Times and days negotiable with the shop manager

     

     

  • Receptionists

    To provide an efficient and effective reception service ensuring that it maintains a caring, friendly, sensitive and welcoming environment for patients, visitors, staff and volunteers whether face to face or by telephone.

    Times needed:

    Mondays 5-8pm,
    Wednesdays 5-8pm,
    Saturdays  5-8pm,
    Sundays 5-8pm all are monthly (once every 4 weeks)

    • Also Bank positions available (ad hoc to cover holidays and other absences)

     


     

    Outpatient Reception Admin

    To support the reception service within the outpatient suite.  This role involves delivering a professional and welcoming reception to outpatients and help with the effective management of clinics during the day, working on the computer.

     

    Monday am, pm or all day.  Thursday am.

  • Voluntary Complementary Therapist

    We are seeking Holistic Therapists with an Aromatherapy, Reflexology and Indian Head Massage qualification to Diploma Level 3 with professional insurance, professional membership and continuous professional development certification.

    Times needed:

    • 1 day a week (Negotiable, Mon - Friday excluding Thursday) for a minimum of 4 hours.

     

    Pets as Therapy – Cats and Dogs

  • We are looking for Activities volunteers to work closely with our children and young adults.  You will be involved in some or all of the following:  Playing games, regular or electronic, arts and crafts, music, cooking, sensory work in our specialist sensory room, and acting as an escort on outings as and when they are planned.  This is a rare opportunity, and is extremely rewarding. 

    AM and PM shifts available, (Not Monday or Wed pm, or Friday am as these shifts are already covered)

  • DIY Volunteer x 2

    To assist in the maintenance and upkeep of St Oswald’s including its shops.  General maintenance of patients’ equipment, beds, chairs etc. Minor repairs to building. Installation of new equipment where appropriate. Moving furniture.

    Days and times negotiable

    Pat Tester x 2

    To assist facilities with all aspects of PAT testing, to test new and update testing of existing equipment.

    Housekeeper

    To ensure that the highest possible standards of hygiene and cleanliness are met and maintained to ensure a clean and safe environment for patients, children, staff, volunteers and visitors within the Hospice.

  • Collection Line Volunteer
