Christmas at St Oswald’s

Our Christmas Market takes place on the last Saturday in November.

Our Christmas Market is one of the highlights of our festive fundraising calendar and a real favourite among our local community.

For one day, much of the Hospice is taken over with stalls, entertainment, raffles and tombola’s and visits from special guests including the big man himself… Santa Claus!

We deck our halls, open our doors and spread some festive cheer in our community. There is a mix of stalls including gifts, toys, food and drink and home wares, plenty of family entertainment and the chance to win prizes in our games and raffles.

Carole Irving, Auxiliary Nurse on our Adult Inpatient Ward, tells us what happens on Christmas Day at St Oswald’s:

Christmas is an emotional time at the Hospice. For some of our patients, the reality is, it may be the last one they spend with their loved ones. We offer a warm, homely environment where families, young and old, can get together, laugh together and enjoy some quality time. It’s a privilege to be part of. Staff and volunteers go the extra mile to make it memorable - kitchen staff, fundraisers, housekeeping, nurses, everyone! We don’t usually get the chance to dress up but at Christmas we make an exception. On Christmas morning we do our usual rounds, wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and every patient receives a gift from us all too. It’s amazing how overwhelmed some people can be from this small gesture.
