Medical Team
St Oswald’s has three consultants, Paul Mcnamara, Claud Regnard and Andrew Hughes who are specialists in palliative care. Our consultants are supported by a team of Doctors, who work alongside our nursing teams to provide day-to-day medical cover.

Paul McNamara
Paul has been working as a Consultant at St Oswald’s for eleven years. Prior to this he worked at St Catherine’s Hospice, in Crawley.
Paul part covers the Inpatient Ward at St Oswald’s and is responsible for all Staff Grade Doctors that work here.
Each of our Consultants carry out outreach sessions in different parts of the region. Paul has responsibility for Northumberland, working very closely with community hospitals, GP’s and Macmillan Nurses, offering advice on palliative care.

Claud Regnard
Claud joined St Oswald’s in June 1986 as our first Medical Director. Twenty years on he is now one of our Consultants in Palliative Medicine.
Each of our Consultants carry out outreach sessions in different parts of the region. Claud has responsibility for the Freeman Hospital, working closely with the palliative care team.
Claud is also heavily involved with the palliative care in learning disabilities team in the Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Trust.
Lecturning and publishing remain important activities for Claud, with particular interests in clinical decision making, symptom control, identifying distress in people with severe communication difficulties, setting up new services and creating accessible learning.

Andrew Hughes
Andrew has been working as a Consultant at St Oswald’s for nine years. Prior to this he spent five years in Derby undertaking his palliative medicine training.
Andrew part covers the Inpatient Ward, is the Educational Supervisor for GP Registrars and Specialist Registrars, training in palliative medicine and is the Consultant for our Lymphoedema patients.
Each of our Consultants carry out outreach sessions in different parts of the region. Andrew covers Gateshead community and the QE hospital palliative care team.
Andrew lectures at Newcastle Medical School and has a keen interest in lymphoedema and developing palliative care for non-cancer patients.
