quality time for everyone

Taster Sessions

Back in 2005 we started running ‘Taster Sessions’ - a six-week programme to introduce adults with life limiting conditions, to some of the services available to them at St Oswald’s. Since then the programme has developed and grown due to popular demand.

The six sessions cover a variety of topics beneficial to patients. These include; Complementary therapy
Advice on benefits and entitlements
Tips on fatigue management
Relaxation and visualisation
Information on diet and nutrition
The final week involves spoiling prospective patients with a ‘pamper session’.

Taster Sessions are a great way for prospective patients to experience St Oswald’s first hand, and realise that we offer a lot more than just end of life care, as people often assume. In 2010, we are hoping to increase the number of programmes we run, hopefully holding up to six.

After listening to feedback from participants, we have developed the programme significantly over the last few years. This year we hope to involve a trained Counsellor, who will be able to talk through how an illness can alter your self-awareness and the way close relationships may be affected. Clinique cosmetics will also hold a session to teach participants how to apply their make up, helping them to look and feel better about themselves.

A Carer who attended the Taster Sessions said:
“The Taster Sessions were appreciated so much and provided a great insight into the work of St Oswald’s. We’ve gained lots more confidence from the sessions, which have been a great help in trying to come to terms with the difficulties we’ve had to face. We also had lots of fun!”

The main aim of the programme is to help people feel better about themselves, boost their self esteem and improve their quality of life - in a fun, relaxed and informal atmosphere.

The sessions are open to men and women of all ages. Patients are more than welcome to bring along a friend, carer or family member, as we have advisors on hand who can give them professional advice too.
